Internship in Bahçelievler Anatolian High School
I have been in an internship period as an English Teacher. I visit Bahçelievler Anatolian High School every week to observe the teachers and the students. Then I will share my observations on this page.
By the way this is my first experience, as official, on teaching.
This week I have observed 10th grade students who use "Solutions Türkiye, A2" in English lessons.
Ezgi -my friend- and I entered the class with the teacher. The teacher greeted the students then she introduced us to them. Greetings and attendance take 15 minutes. (It's too long for me)
The teacher asked a question to the students about their previous homework, "Check your homework notes, if you have any question ask me now!".
Then she started the lesson with an exercise from the book (There is not a warm up activity to motivate the students for the lesson) but she spoke in English during the lesson to make the students focus on the lesson. Even if they asked a question in Turkish, she answered in English.
The unit contains of four skill activities -mainly focused on listening- is about "hobbies". There are a lot of listening activities in the book and the teacher didn't skip them, this makes me feel pleased because English teachers generally do not pay attention on listening activities, unfortunately. By the way I have realized that it is easy to apply listening activities by using smartboard (The teacher often uses smartboard for activities).
When the teacher asks a question to someone, she tries to sustain the dialogue with the student. For example;
Teacher: "What are your hobbies Melda?"
Student: "Shopping, dancing,..."
Teacher: "Hmm, you like shopping. What kind of shopping, outfit?"
Student: "Yes, I like it."
Sometimes, she posed questions to the students according to the exercise to relate it with real life. For example;
(There is a vocabulary activity, the word is "patient")
Teacher gives a sentence "Teachers should be patient but they are usually impatient." Then asks "What about your parents, are they patient?"
-Students answers.
The teacher always turned back to the former activities to relate all of the activities in the unit. This is important for providing recycle vocabulary.
When the students were answering the questions the teacher interrupted them to correct grammar and pronunciation mistakes. (There should be indirect error-correction not to make the students feel distracted.)
Except the examples, I realized that there was a teacher-centered class.
I feel excited for my next observation. I will write my opinions as soon as I attend the lesson of 10/F.
See you soon!
